Packing Tips for a Smooth Trip

Packing for yourself and your kids can be overwhelming, but a clear plan helps. Here’s how I pack efficiently for vacation:

Create a Packing List

Start with a checklist to avoid forgetting essentials. Include:

  • Weather appropriate clothing

  • Nicer clothes for dinners or evening events

  • Swim and/or beach gear if needed

  • Comfortable shoes for walking or hiking

  • Travel documents: IDs, passports, tickets, and reservations

  • Medications and first aid supplies - Pack enough meds for your entire trip plus a few extra days

  • Chargers and electronic devices

  • Toiletries

Prepare Travel Day Bags for Each Family Member

  • Healthy snacks like nuts, fruit, or granola bars to avoid hunger and maintain energy

  • Water bottle to stay hydrated

  • Entertainment for kids and adults: books, tablets, coloring books, or travel games

  • Hand sanitizer and wipes for cleanliness

  • A small travel pillow or blanket for comfort

Staying Healthy and Active on Vacation

Being on vacation can disrupt your routine (and that's okay), but you can work to maintain your healthy lifestyle without feeling restricted.

Keep Moving

Find ways to stay active that fit your vacation style:

  • Walk or bike to explore local sights instead of driving

  • Swim in the hotel pool or nearby beach

  • Use the hotel gym if available

  • Try family-friendly activities like biking, hiking, or kayaking

Stay Hydrated and Snack Smart

Travel and outdoor activities can dehydrate you quickly. Carry a refillable water bottle and drink regularly. Pack snacks that nourish you and prevent irritability, such as:

  • Fresh fruit or dried fruit

  • Nuts and seeds

  • Whole grain crackers or bars

Balance Indulgence with Healthy Choices

It’s okay to enjoy treats while on vacation (or anytime!!). I try to indulge at one meal or dessert per day. This way, I enjoy the foods I want without feeling deprived.

Try to Maintain Your Sleep Schedule

Sleep affects your energy and mood. Try to keep your usual bedtime and wake-up time as much as possible. Bring items that help you sleep well, like earplugs, a sleep mask, or a favorite pillow.

Don’t Forget Sunscreen

Protect your skin by applying sunscreen daily, even on cloudy days. Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and reapply after swimming or sweating.
